Energy
We depend upon fossil fuels for the majority of our energy needs. There is still a lot of fossil fuel left but altering the chemistry of our atmosphere is not without consequences. The rate that we can get energy from fossil fuels is also limited and limits what we can do as a species. Fighting over the easy to get at fossil fuels is a source of much human suffering. There are better alternatives.

Food
The way we feed ourselves has a major impact on the planet. The way we are presently feeding ourselves can not be sustained indefinitely, soils are being depleted, the aquifers are being depleted faster than nature refills them. The oceans are being fished out faster than they can reproduce. The chemicals we're dumping into our rivers are feeding algae near the surface and creating huge oxygen depleted dead zones below. How can we change this so that we can continue to feed ourselves indefinitely?

Industry
After transportation, industry is the largest consumer of fossil fuels. Japans industry is twice as efficient as ours in terms of gross national product / energy consumption. Improving the efficiency of our industries will not only safe fuel consumption but it will reduce costs which in turn will allow our industry to be more competitive on the world market.

Shelter
We have to live somewhere, six+ billion of us. Our shelters, homes, take a lot of space, consume a lot of resources to build and maintain. Often man and other species don't co-exist well. How can we minimize our impact on other species?

Transportation
Energy for transportation presents unique challenges because most sustainable energy sources do not lend themselves to portable applications. For these we either need an on-board energy storage systems that can be recharged with fixed sources or some method of supplying power to moving vehicles continuously.
