Icon AbiWord 2.4.5

What use is a Word Processor when you can't share your documents with your friends? AbiWord is able to read and write all industry standard document types, such as OpenOffice.org documents, Microsoft Word documents, WordPerfect documents, Rich Text Format documents, HTML web pages and many more. AbiWord is a free word processing program similar to Microsoft Word. It is suitable for typing papers, letters, reports, memos, and so forth. AbiWord is unique among word processors in its drive to become a fully cross-platform word processor. Our source code is carefully written so that AbiWord will run on virtually any operating system with a minimum of time spent on porting. This combined with our support for internationalization (the ability to run AbiWord in many languages) gives AbiWord a massive potential user-base.

Icon Aquamacs Emacs 1.3b

Aquamacs is an easy-to-use, Mac-style Emacs for OS X
An Editor for Text, HTML, LaTeX, C++, Java, Python, Perl and more...
Aquamacs is an Aqua-native build of the powerful Emacs text editor. By "Aqua-native," we mean more than just the fact that this version of Emacs runs as a standard OS X application. Aquamacs features extensive customization that enables it to conform better with Apple's standard Human Interface Guidelines (HIG) than standard versions of the editor do.
Emacs is a text editor of legendary power and configurability, but it also has an enormously complex user interface. One advantage of it is: no matter what operating system you run Emacs on, you'll always get the same interface. The big problem: if you use a number of applications on your Mac, one of them is Emacs, you'll have to switch gears when you switch to Emacs.
Aquamacs is better. We support the standard Mac user interface that you've come to love. For instance, in addition to traditional Emacs shortcuts like C-x C-f (open a new file), Aquamacs understands Apple-O. Aquamacs behaves like a modern application on Mac (or Windows) when it comes to selecting, copying, pasting texts within Aquamacs or in between applications. Aquamacs offers nice, smooth fonts. Asian input methods work. It's easy to install and runs out-of-the box with no configuration. And all is built on GNU Emacs, so you can use your favorite Emacs packages!

icon Bean 1.2

Bean is a small, simple word processor (or more precisely, a rich text editor), with many niceties added to make writing convenient, efficient and comfortable. Bean is powered by the same text engine as Apple's Text Edit, but it adds live word count and the ability to adjust printed margins. Lots of other features too. MS Word, OpenOffice, etc. try to be all things to all people. But sometimes you just want the right tool for the job. That is Bean's niche.

Bean is not a replacement for MS Word. It does not do footnotes or hierarchical styles. Further, it is only partially compatible with MS Word's .doc format.

Icon cocoAspell 2.0.4

cocoAspell is Mac OS X implementation of Aspell -- A more intelligent Ispell -- that is being developed by Kevin Atkinson. Here is a brief snippet of how Kevin describes Aspell on his web site: Aspell is an Open Source spell checker designed to eventually replace Ispell. Its main feature is that it does a much better job of coming up with possible suggestions than Ispell does. In fact recent tests shows that it even does better than Microsoft Word 97's spell checker or just about any other spell checker I have seen. It also has support for checking (La)TeX and HTML files, and run time support for other non English languages.
By default the cocoAspell package comes only with the English dictionary that contains American, British, and Canadian variations. To spell check a document in another language you may have to download, compile, and install the corresponding spelling dictionary.

Icon CopyWrite 2.2.9

CopyWrite is a project manager for writers of all kinds. Rather than focus on formatting and layout, CopyWrite stands apart in its project-oriented approach. Word processors and page layout tools are good at what they do - formatting and layout - but they offer no help at all to a writer during the creative process. In fact, the 'gee-whiz' features crammed into these tools do more to hinder writers, getting in the way of their work flow. Put simply, these tools constipate writers; CopyWrite is like a tasty bran muffin ... with extra bran.

Each of these scores is calculated after determining the number of sentences, words and syllables a document contains. Using those numbers, the Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level and Flesch Reading Ease Score can then be calculated.

icon Jer's Novel Writer 1.1.2

Jer's Novel Writer is a relatively simple word processor with extra features to support large creative writing projects.
I wrote this program to fit the way I write. More specifically, I wrote it to help overcome my shortcomings. It would be terribly presumptuous to think that anyone else out there faces the same obstacles I do when I write, but it would also be presumptuous to think that I was the only one in the world with these problems. So I offer what I created to make me a better writer, hoping that it will help others too.
This program is all about momentum, and reducing the number of things that break the flow when I am writing. Jer's Novel Writer is designed to help me keep writing when the creative juices are flowing, and then find all the things I need to go over again when I am more in a nitty-gritty mood.

Icon LaTeX Equation Editor 1.3

Double-click the Equation Editor icon to launch the program. Once it has launched, enter the following into the main text box:
\sum_{i=0}^{n} {n \choose i} = 2^n
Click the "LaTeX" button to typeset the equation. If all has gone well, a graphic should appear in the blank area above the main text box.
To insert the equation into Keynote, just drag it. To save the equation as a PDF file, either drag the graphic to the Desktop (or some other folder), or click on "Export..." under the File menu. Dragging the equation to the Desktop or a folder will create a PDF file named "image-NNN.pdf" where NNN is replaced by a numeric index. If you would like something a bit more descriptive, rename the file or use Export..., as that allows you to specify a different name for the file.

LyX is designed for scientists by scientists, and it shows, in world-class support for math and structured document creation. Such staples of scientific authoring as reference list and index creation come standard. But you don't have to be a scientist: with LyX you create just as easily a letter or a novel or a theatre play or film script. A broad array of ready, well designed document layouts and style modification and feature support packages are built in.

Imagine having the citation and abstract for every paper in each of your current research areas, organized in an iTunes-like interface for rapid access, and updated automatically every day -- all on your own computer. Sente can do this for you.
Sente makes it easy to research new areas by providing an intuitive interface for complex searches of a variety of data sources. Instead of the search results disappearing when you close your web browser, Sente stores the results on your computer for as long as you need them. And, exploring these references is easier than it has ever been before, thanks to Sente's advanced browsing and filtering features.
Having the search results on your computer gives you options you have never had before: reviewing the papers at any time, even without an Internet connection; quickly sifting through the collection by keyword, author or journal; or searching for one or more terms and having them immediately highlighted in the text as you flip through each abstract.
If you have access to the full-text of an article as a PDF, just drop it into Sente. Double-clicking on the reference will then automatically open up the article in your favorite viewer.

Icon Tofu 1.3.4

Tofu is... different. It is a novel application to address the common problem that people don't like reading text on the screen. Why is that anyway? I believe there are two main reasons: line width and visual instability. Text is usually very wide on the screen, which makes going from the end of one line to the beginning of the next difficult. That's why newspapers have narrow columns: It makes them faster to read. So why not just take a normal window and make it narrower, scrolling down as you need? Well, there are usually a lot of lines in a text, and all look more or less the same, so if they move past your eyes vertically, they are difficult to keep track of. The text doesn't feel stable, and you get lost easily. In Tofu, text is arranged in columns, and each column is only as high as your window. So lines are nice and narrow, they don't move about vertically, plus your text is now in easy-to-digest chunks. You just scroll from column to column horizontally, and feel more in control. Tofu also includes some other useful features to make reading easier for you. You can jump to any point in your text by simply typing some letters near it (without choosing any command first). There's a system-wide Service so you can, for example, grab some text from a web page. And it lets you use your voice to navigate text, so you can literally sit back and read.

Icon TeXShop 2.14

TeXShop is a TeX previewer for Mac OS X, written in Cocoa. Since pdf is a native file format on OS X, TeXShop uses "pdftex" and "pdflatex" rather than "tex" and "latex" to typeset; these programs in the standard teTeX distribution of TeX produce pdf output instead of dvi output.
TeXShop uses TeXLive and teTeX, standard distributions of Tex programs for Unix machines. The distributions include tex, latex, dvips, tex fonts, cyrillic fonts, and virtually all other programs and supporting files commonly used in the TeX world. These distributions are maintained for the Mac by Gerben Wierda, and are available below.
