Aurora Linux is a Sparc specific port based on RedHat Fedora. Development tends to happen in spurts and the project website has not been updated since December of 2007. Still, it's far more current than RedHat 6.2, the last version of RedHat to support Sparc hardware.

CentOS is a distribution derived from RedHat for x86 hardware. The latest release includes Xen virtualization. It has GUI installation, configuration, and desktop that make it easy for the push button and picture generation of computer users. This is one of the most complete distributions I've seen.

Debian is a Linux distribution based upon GNU tools. Most Linux distributions use a large number of GNU tools but often include other software with various degrees of openness and propriety. Debian makes it a point to stick strictly to GNU licensed open sourced tools.

Fedora is the free community supported Linux offshoot of Redhat. It tends to serve as a test bed for RedHat's Enterprise Linux and as such tends to have the latest cutting edge open sourced software. If you're an old-school Linux user that prefers a command line shell prompt to a GUI and you like tweaking and tuning the latest and greatest, this is your OS. If you're more the push-button GUI type, try CentOS which is based upon Fedora but has a nice GUI interface but lags slightly behind Fedora.

Linux Mint is a Linux distribution based upon Ubuntu but where Ubuntu is a hackers Linux, Mint is a polished GUI oriented users Linux.

Mandriva started out as Mandrake. Originally derived from Redhat, it has gone through much evolution. At this point it has a look and feel that many Windows-XP users might find comfortable. This is a good end user Linux distribution but the free version is not the most up to date or complete.

openSUSE is a free Linux based operating system for your laptop, PC, or Server.

Ubuntu is a community developed Linux distribution for the x86 architecture. There are two distributions, a server, a desktop distribution (also suitable for laptops). This distribution seems to have a lot of very devoted followers..

Yellow Dog Linux is a Linux Port based upon Redhat and CentOS for the Power PC Processor family. Primarily it is used on Power PC based McIntosh computers.
