I've replaced the old phpBB2 software with the new
phpBB3 software. The real incentive for doing this was that with the old software, spammers had found ways to automate their spamming and ways to create accounts bypassing the normal verification procedure. They had also found ways to evade the ban list rendering it ineffective so I couldn't keep them off. They were creating new accounts at an average rate of about four an hour and posting spams about once an hour and it was just impossible to keep up with that rate of abuse.
The new phpBB3 software does a lot more. Now we can
nest forums any number of levels deep which means we can categorize and sort things and expand things to any degree which we like. In addition, we can do this dynamically, so when one forum becomes too splintered, we can create several sub-forums and divide up the messages. We can have
both categories and sub-forums. And a new feature they call link topics, allows you to place a topic in a forum that is a link to another location, either inside the BBS or external.
So please, let us know what
you would like to see in the way of forums and features in this BBS. Also note, there is now a separate section for BBS related bugs and requests and Eskimo North general bugs and requests.
