Visited a customer today that was having issues with his DSL connection (configuration problem) and discovered something I felt I should document in case someone else runs into this problem.
Until today; all of the GT701's I've seen are the type in a white case with a rounded front. But there exists a version that is a charcoal gray brick design with slanted corners on the left and right. The reset to defaults option does not work on that unit so you can not depend upon it to get back into a sane state.
Consequently, if you have one of these, everything appears to be set correctly but it not only will not authenticate but will not even try to authenticate, check the DSL settings, even if you've done a reset to defaults. In the DSL settings the VCI/VPI should be 0,32 for Qwest, 0,35 for Verizon, ATT, etc. The mode should be set to MMODE, and the QOS to UBR (not VBR).
In the advanced settings make sure Auto Connect PPP is checked, it is not set to unnumbered IP, it is set to PPPOA for Qwest or PPPOE for Verizon, ATT, etc. Be sure NAT and DHCP are enabled.
