It will run generally faster, far more stable, but doesn't run Windows applications directly. You can use wine to run windows applications but not all applications will run this way. In general though the stability and security are far better.
It is possible to setup a machine dual-boot (that's how I have this machine setup) so you can boot into Linux or Windows as the need arises.
