Setup of Eskimo DSL

Firmware Issues

If you are experiencing an inability to connect to specific sites, most commonly sites relating to Microsoft such as microsoft.com, msn.com, hotmail.com, or live.com, but are able to connect to other sites; this is a symptom of a firmware issue with some GT701WG wireless gateway units.

If you are experiencing this problem, please go to Qwest's support page for this unit Here and then click on "Drivers / firmware update & recovery".

Eskimo Specific Requirements

Advanced Setup of your ActionTEC GT701 Wireless DSL Gateway is required to accomodate Eskimo North's daily re-authentication transparently. If you setup the GT701WG with the Basic Setup you will need to power cycle it once a day to re-establish internet access. Following these Advanced Setup steps will provide uninterrupted internet access.

Setup Steps

With your web browser connect to http://192.168.0.1/

Address Bar

The "Main Menu" screen should appear. Select Setup/Configuration.

In the "Set Up/COnfiguration" menu, select Advanced Setup from the left menu.

In the next screen, ignore the recommendations and click Begin Advanced Setup.

On the "Configuring the Advanced Settings" screen, Click on "WAN IP Address" in the left menu.

In the "WAN IP Address" menu, select your connection type.

If you are in Qwest service territory and have a Qwest DSL circuit, select "PPPOA". Please note that this is contrary to the instructions Qwest provides. This is because Qwest defaults to PPPOE now but we are still setup to use PPPOA with Qwest DSL circuits.

If you are in Verizon, AT&T, BellSouth, or Covad territory and served with a DSL circuit from one of these telephone companies, select "PPPOE"e;.

Do NOT make any other changes on this screen. Press the "Next" button.

The "Broadband Connection via PPPoE" and "Broadband Connection via PPPoA" screens are very similar. In either case, you must check the box labeled, "PPP auto connect" and enter your User Name and Password. Do NOT change anything else.

After entering these hit the "Next" through the rest of the screens, then select, "Save and Restart", and you're done! Your DSL will now reboot and provided everything has been entered correctly, connect, maybe. I've had reports from customers that these units occasionally fail to save their settings and that it can take two or three attempts for the settings to save.

The GT701 series is a new series that replaces the 1524 series of ActionTEC modems. It features twice the memory and twice the processor speed of the 1524 but it appears there may be a few glitches.
