This friday, starting at 11pm US West will be taking lines out of service
in order to cut them from an overloaded 1AESS switchin in Emerson into a new
digital 5ESS switch.
At the same time we are going to take communications servers out of
service to add additional memory to them.
Both projects will probably take several hours to complete. During that
time you will experience ring-no-answers, busy signals, disconnects, and other
call anomolies.
As things stand every sunday evening between 8pm-10pm and often weekdays
around the noon lunch hour we experience problems with the phones. We are
hopeful that this cutover into a new telco switch will fix this.
Since we upgraded all the remaining 14.4k modems to 33.6k modems, the
increased speed has increased the demand for buffer space on the communications
servers causing slow response, failure to negotiate a PPP session, and
occasional freezes and unplanned reboots. The memory we will be adding this
friday should address that situation (we will be more than tripling the memory
on each unit).
