Mail SMTP Problems
A lot of people have reported difficulty sending e-mail via SMTP. The
vast majority of these problems are caused by incorrect DNS on 56k/ISDN dial-up
ports contracted through StarNet/MegaPOP. A portion of these problems are the
result of improper DNS delegation by backbone data providers.
Because these DNS problems have been ongoing and difficult to resolve, I
added the IP space by IP address to the hosts.allow to allow connections from
this IP space even if there is no inverse DNS.
This should fix the problem in the cases where there is no inverse DNS,
either because it hasn't been properly entered or because of delegation
problems, but it will not fix the problems from an occasional typographical
error in which the inverse DNS exists but does not match the forward DNS.
We will continue to work with MegaPOP to resolve the core DNS issues but
this should at least reduce the negative impact upon service.
In the process of doing this there was a period where I futzed the
hosts.allow file and all connections were being denied.
