I'm going to be moving some services to ultra-sparc machines and changing
the configuration of some things in an effort to resolve some host related
problems.
Inevitably this will involve some disruption but I will do my best to
minimize it and keep it out of prime-time hours.
The goal of these changes is to resolve some issues with unstable web
services, slow pop-3 response in some cases, slow shell services, etc.
The two areas where I have major concern, I am going to move the web
servers to Ultrasparc system(s); this will cause incompatibility with compiled
binaries, so some of you who have compiled cgi scripts, we may need to
recompile them.
If we have compiled C CGI programs for you in the past, please let me know
so we can do this for you at the time the change is made.
We are going to move the mail spool and servers off the machines they are
presently on, the existing drive does not have the necessary thruput. This is
going to require a rather lengthy copy during which mail will be inaccessible
because of a need to keep the files static during the copy. Mail will not be
lost but it will be delayed/inaccessible during the period when this is done.
