Synth function of play

If you use x2go with our Linux servers so you have a full graphics console with sound and need a audio signal generator say to nail down a resonance in your speaker system or check for rattles or something you can use play to generate wave forms of various frequencies. For example:

play -n synth 5 sine 50

Would generate a 50 Hz sine wave for five seconds. "man play" will show other options.

Is there a way to turn off the synth sequencer and just play the synth along with the drum patterns?

Not in play but if you to Applications -> Sound and Video, there is drumkv1 which is a drumkit sampler sequencer program.
