Problems with heavy load on Eskimo were caused by problems with mx1, one
of our mail servers. It crashed and scribbled the root file system pretty bad,
removing /etc/HOSTNAME amoung other things (many other things), and Linux
defaults to darkstar.frop.org in the absence of this file. It tried to bind to
eskimo's ypserv repeatedly but couldn't because of the incorrect hostname but
basically dragged eskimo down severely in the process and it took us a while to
figure out what was going on and correct it.
