I don't know what happened, but eskimo basically went out to
lunch, to the point that my only choice was to power cycle the machine to
get it to reboot.
Of course, since it did not shut down completely, I had to
manually fsck some of the partitions before the machine would come back
up. Sorry for the interruption.
