As a last ditch thing to try, I reformatted the drive in chat, my thought
being that even if the machine was dead, I wanted to blitz any information in
it before disposing of it.
The format was successful, the verify was successful. I found that the
drive was partitioned for one more cylinder than it actually had.
Repartitioned it, made new file systems, reloaded everything back from tape and
it is up and running again.
