www2 crashed.
The crash was from a known bug in Linux where it is randomly killing
processes when there is memory pressure, and occasionally kills something
critical, like in this case, swapper.
I am told this will be fixed in 2.2.17, though there is still ongoing
argument about how virtual memory should work in Linux and the release of
2.2.17 has been delayed, in part because one of the principal kernel developers
is in the process of moving.
In the meantime there isn't much we can do about this bug except reboot.
