I made a mistake when I set things up to mount off of the new file server.
The directory that was the mount point was mode 700, this made it impossible
for shells which walk backwards to root to find the current working directory,
rather than using the system call provided for that purpose, fail.
It wasn't an obvious error, because once the file system is mounted, you
can't see the directory below it. It is fixed now.
