News was failing to connect for NNTP and other things (UUCP sending, etc.) due to memory forking errors. I could see free memory available, and things didn't seem to be at the maximum number of processes; I shut things down properly to reboot. However, upon booting, although the memory check came up normal, the system started the usual 3-4 hour disk scan after finding errors on the disk.
