The Ultra1 file server crashed at 23:04 Pacific time on 1/4/2004 and was restored to service at 11:47. I didn't receive any calls regarding service problems and so was not immediately aware of the servers downed status until I tried to retrieve mail. The cause of the crash appears to be software this time, specifically a race condition within the Linux kernel.
