News Restored

The news machine suffered an outage yesterday when one of the spool drives
wedged. The operation of the drive was restored by power-cycling but the
ungraceful halt caused file system corruption.

Last night I ran a badblocks check which hadn't been done for a long time
to remove any bad blocks. The spool disks on eskinews are the old Seagate 49gb
full height 5-1/4 inch drives which were SCSI-2 (I've seen these still for sale
but I'm not sure the firmware hasn't been upgraded over the years), so blocks
need to be mapped out manually. This process takes about 12 hours, and then a
file system check needed to be run after that.

It's back up and running now.
