Self-description:
Protecting the Land and Heritage
of New Mexico. Support the fight for local self-determination
by donating to Common Ground United. Your generous contribution will
help ensure that all citizens have a meaningful role in developing
local policies to protect their environment, health, culture, and
economy from the adverse impacts of extractive resource development.
Common Ground United is an affiliate of EARTHWORKS and uses
EARTHWORKS credit card processing system to accept your donation -
as a result, your tax deductible donation will appear on your credit
card statement as Democracy In Action. [Democracy
in Action is funded by George Soros and wealthy foundations.]
Actual:
Aggressive campaigning to destroy
all resource use in New Mexico, viciously demonizing oil and gas development.
Influenced New
Mexico's Oil Conservation
Division (OCD)
to promulgate Special Provisions for Santa Fe County and the Galisteo Basin, orchestrated OCD hearings in
December 2008. Operates
specific projects to destroy all resource use in Galisteo Basin,
Rio Chama, Le Bajada Mesa, Mora County and West Mesa / Atrisco Land
Grant.
In August 2008, Common Ground United
joined with Defenders of Wildlife, the Natural Resources
Defense Council, Oil and Gas Accountability Project, Rocky Mountain
Clean Air Action, and Wild Earth Guardians and
protested the BLM August 26, 2008 lease sale to the states of
Montana and North Dakota totaling 25,274 acres on the BLM
land for failing to address global warming and climate change and
adverse consequences.
History:
Common Ground United appeared on the Web in April 2008 as a
collection of 64 separate organizations and individuals. CGU is not
incorporated and has no accountable officers. It is headed by
rancher Johnny Micou, executive director. He is a member of
CGU's three-person Executive Committee with Gwen Lachelt (Earthworks'
Oil and Gas
Accountability Project) and Oscar Simpson (New
Mexico Wildlife Federation and
National Wildlife
Federation). Micou is also the founder of Drilling Santa Fe.
Common Ground
United has no financial statement of its own and does not report
income to the state of New Mexico or the United States Internal
Revenue Service. It has access to the resources of its fiscal
sponsor, Earthworks.
