Self-description:
The
CENTER for SCIENCE in PUBLIC PARTICIPATION provides objective
research, education and technical advice to grassroots groups,
non-governmental organizations, regulatory agencies, businesses, and
indigenous communities on natural resource issues, especially those
related to mining.
Actual: Provides science-to-order for Earthworks and allied groups
at the instigation of the Brainerd Foundation and others.
NoDOG Connection:
The Center for Science in Public Participation (CSPP) has been
virtually the personal science-to-order organization of Steven
D'Esposito, executive director of Mineral Policy Center, since 2001,
when he took over the group as chairman of the board of directors. When
the
Brainerd Foundation arranged the merger between Mineral Policy Center and Oil and Gas
Accountability Project in 2004 to create
Earthworks,
CSPP began to receive Brainerd grants instructing the group "To
provide focused technical support to Earthworks and its allied groups
seeking to reform federal and state hardrock mining practices."
The actual work carried over into anti-oil and gas campaigns, for
example:
