Description:
New Mexico affiliate of the
National Wildlife
Federation, an old-line
hunting and fishing organization founded
in 1936 that was gradually co-opted by environmentalist leaders
beginning in the 1980s, alienating former members who departed, and
recruiting a new social-change and ideologically oriented
membership.
In 2004, the
national group chose a new CEO who made
global warming its top priority, with extreme prejudice against
fossil fuels, particularly oil and gas.
The New Mexico affiliate is obligated to
follow the lead of the national organization.
In January 2008,
New Mexico Wildlife Federation President and Board Member Oscar A.
Simpson III was appointed by New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson as
a Commissioner of the New Mexico State Game Commission. He retained
a position in NMWF as "Conservation Policy Chair." Simpson's
connections to numerous anti-oil and gas groups has given rise to
anger and suspicion about the Commission, especially its adoption of
rules written by
Sportsmen for Responsible Energy Development, which is supported
by NMWF.
