Rainforest Action
Network is mapped on
Muckety.
Self-description:
Rainforest Action Network protects the Earth's rainforests and
supports the rights of their inhabitants. RAN mobilizes consumers,
retailers, manufacturers, and financiers to advocate for corporate
policies and business ethics that embrace ecological and community
sustainability.
Actual:
Social shakedown group, harassing companies until they cave in to
RAN demands for payoffs to related groups, thus avoiding charges of
blackmail if they demanded funds for themselves in return for
stopping unlawful actions.
NoDOG Connection: Rainforest Action
Network
sent trainers to the
Oil and Gas Accountability Project and the
Dogwood Initiative 2004 Denver, Colorado workshop,
Corporate Energy Campaigning:
Using financial pressure for conservation.
Brief Sketch: Began as a Randall Hayes project called "People of the
Earth" (1981), which was adopted by David Brower's Earth Island Institute (1982).
Hayes founded an information group called "Rainforest Action Network" (1984),
which developed into an unincorporated organization (1985), which became a nonprofit
California Corporation (1987), which absorbed "People of the Earth" (1988) and
grew into an activist force with more than 150 allied groups, some performing unlawful
acts such as trespass and theft of goods according to Rainforest Action Network plans and
advisories. Major organizer of unlawful acts, paid $40,000 in fines and penalties for
unlawful acts.
Executive
Director self-profile:
Michael Brune is RAN's
Executive Director. He oversees, coordinates, and integrates the
activities of the organization's programs.
Previously, Mike served as RAN's Campaigns
Director, and led RAN's Old-Growth
Campaign. Mike directed the campaign to push Home Depot to adopt its
landmark wood purchasing policy, which has led to a subsequent shift
for more than a third of the American wood and paper markets. Mike
currently oversees and directs strategy for RAN's
programs, including RAN's initiative to
reduce the ecological and social footprint of the financial service
industry. Mike has also been a giant force in developing the
Jumpstart Ford Campaign given his wealth of experience in both
running and overseeing markets campaigns. Before RAN, Mike worked
with the Coastal Rainforest Coalition and Greenpeace, where he ran
the San Francisco office for two years. Mike earned dual BS degrees
in Economics and Finance from West Chester University.
