Special Event - July 22 & 23, 2006

Sea Lion Movie Poster

Dear Members and Friends,

We are extremely proud to announce the exciting premier ofCalifornia Sea Lions, An Unforgettable Encounter, at the Seattle Aquarium. This breathtaking documentary takes an up-close look at these playful pinnipeds. Proceeds of this two day event will benefit both the Seattle Aquarium and our Puget Sound Chapter of the American Cetacean Society.

Why, you may ask, is the American Cetacean Society getting involved with a sea lion movie? First of all, an opportunity arose through a small film production team from California. Rio Films, as it is called, produced its first nature documentary featuring the sleek California sea lion. Rio Films has agreed to premier this documentary for us at the Seattle Aquarium on the weekend of July 22 and 23. Proceeds of these showings and a special screening and reception on Saturday evening will go to the Seattle Aquarium and the Puget Sound Chapter of the American Cetacean Society. Secondly, Seals and sea lions, also known as pinnipeds, have adapted similarly to their environment as whales and dolphins (cetaceans), and like cetaceans face many of the same threats. Often unappreciated and dismissed as pests, this beautiful movie show this amazing pinniped in a completely different light. Wonderfully narrated by Hollywood actor Sean Astin (Rudy, Lord of the Rings), this movie is not to be missed!

Three daily showings of this 40 minute documentary will be presented on July 22-23, at 11:30am, 1:30pm and 4pm. A Q&A with director and cameraman Alan DeHerrera will follow each showing. Signed DVD videos are available afterwards

On Saturday, July 22 at 7PM, we will have a special screening and reception. We will have fantastic door prizes and an opportunity to see the Seattle Aquarium’s exhibits after hours!

We hope you can join us at this unique and unforgettable event. Seating in the Seattle Aquarium’s classroom is limited, so get your tickets in advance by calling 206-386-4330.
