Ugly bags of mostly water This is another idea I hope to eventually rewrite, both to expand on it and to present it more clearly. One idea that was appealing came about while musing on the nature of evolution. I've always liked the concept that "evolution is the process of the universe becoming aware of itself." Which is true. We are born of the earth and we realize that we are part of the earth and part of the universe, not seperate from it. Yet there is a spiritual side too. Matter created life. From the earth we arose. Yet spirit also creates itself. And much of the spiritual seems to reflect the material (or vice versa). Perhaps matter truly is created in the image of spirit. But how far? Is there a background spiritual field which has evolved into more aware and complex forms? Matter does not exist independantly of energy. Matter does not exist independantly of spirit which is the drive within us. Does spirit exist independantly of matter? If so, we cannot know that while we exist as matter anyway. So life simply as evolved dirt is mechanical. Thinking dirt. It acts and reacts in order to organize and manipulate the matter around it to create more thinking dirt. Yet if the spirit exists within, a drive for purpose other than the manipulation of material forms, then spirit itself becomes the reason for evolution. Did evolution create spirit? What are we evolving to?
