Manager: Uncle Steve (who is based near Glenelg, S.A. and has never been to Norway; nor does he desire to go there.)
Home Town: Rather distributed... home oval is in Oslo, Norway but the after match piss-ups generally happen in Asgard, the hall of the Gods.
Team Colours: Black with a gold sash (shaped like a thunderbolt)
Team Mascot: Thor's Thunderbolt (we thought of it BEFORE the Smears, thankyou)
A Viking for me, a Viking for me,
If you're not a Viking you're no good to me.
The Dingoes are small and the New Sturts are tall,
The bonny wee Viking's the pride of them all!
Mortal Enemies: No enemies as such... though we are looking forward to the beginning of a friendly rivalry with the New Sturt Blues this season.
The clubs origins are shrouded in some mystery. A few hazy photographs, plus the existance of an 8-year-old player suggests that the Viking Raiders may have been one of the seminal SPARF teams. Current manager Uncle Steve was plucked from a shady bar in downtown Glenelg towards the end of the 3rd SPARF season. Uncle Steve's first match was a memorable 285 to 0 hammering of the Platypi. That was in the good old days, when the old simulator reigned the SPARF field, and we doubt that the Raiders shall ever repeat this feat in today's closer matches. 2 wins and 2 losses in the relegation series saw the Raiders seeded bottom in Silver division of season 4. The Vikings promptly lost 7 matches on the trot before beating the Limboland Mists, and finished the season third from bottom with a 3-12 record. Again the Vikings scored 2-2 in relegation and were seeded 11th in the new Silver division. This season was a resounding success, the team coming in equal second (weeellll... actually 7th on percentage) with a 10-5 record. However 3 defeats in the relegation series quashed any hope of breaking into Gold for the next season.
Having inherited the team from some poor unfortunate, many of the older players are named after ancient warriors. Not all Nordic, there are a few Greek, Roman and Mongolian names on the team list, and even a couple of rejects from "Snow White". However last year Uncle Steve adopted a policy of drafting talent from the Glenelg Football Club and all of last year's recruits were members of the current GFC league side. Expect the Viking Raiders to evolve into a team of Glenelg champions as new recruits replace the old has-beens...
