A regularly scheduled class, 8 weeks in length that prepares you for taking the AKC CGC test.

The test will be administered during the eighth class.

Canine Good Citizen Classes & Testing is Open to ALL dogs, purebred or mixed breed, of any age, The American Kennel Club (AKC) sponsors this test to ensure that our favorite companion, the dog, can be a respected member of the community because it is trained to act mannerly in the home, in public places, and in the presence of other dogs. There are ten different items that show how well trained and socialized your dog is in everyday situations. Dogs that pass will receive a certificate from the AKC. People complete this test with their dogs for many different reasons. The main one being it is the first step in therapy dog work. Also in some cases, if your dog passes your home insurance may be lowered and if you rent a house or apartment, you will have more options and a better chance of renting if your dog is a Canine Good Citizen.

The ten different items test your dog in everyday situations. They are:

accepting a friendly stranger

sitting politely for petting,

appearance and grooming

out for a walk (walking on a loose leash)

walking through a crowd

sit and down on command/stay in place

coming when called

reaction to another dog

reaction to distractions, and

supervised separation
