Presented in partnership with Facing History and Ourselves’ Community Conversation series, New York Times best-selling author Lisa See will present and sign her latest novel “Shanghai Girls” (2009), which follows the story of two sisters through 1930s Shanghai, Angel Island, and Los Angeles Chinatown. This program will continue the dialogue of Chinese and Chinese American presence in Hollywood sparked by the exhibit, Hollywood Chinese: The Arthur Dong Collection. Beyond the 15 Minutes: Documentary Screenings and a Panel Discussion on the Lasting Legacy of Film

Screenings of documentary shorts, complemented with a moderated panel of emerging and established Chinese American filmmakers, will highlight this program’s mission to encourage and inspire the next generation of Chinese American filmmakers. Prospective participating film writers, directors, and producers include: Jodi Long (Writer) Long Story Short (2008), Jeffrey Chin In Search of Roots (2006), Lou Nakasako Batman Not Chinese (2008), and Felicia Lowe Carved in Silence (1988). Lantern Festival 2010

Everyone’s favorite community tradition is celebrating its ninth year at El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historical Monument! Lantern Festival 2010 will spotlight the sights and sounds of this popular Chinese holiday with a recreation of a traditional village street fair featuring brilliant lantern displays, exciting stage performances, a variety of interactive workshops showcasing Chinese traditional and culturally-diverse arts and crafts, and a not-to-be-missed book talk featuring some pretty amazing authors! Save the date now -- participation at the festival will be free of charge as always!

Lantern Festival 2010 – CAM’s signature annual community event – welcomes notable authors, Bonnie Tsui (American Chinatown: A People’s History of Five Neighborhoods) and Paula Yoo (Shining Star: The Anna May Wong Story) to discuss and autograph their latest literary projects. Presented in conjunction with the Hollywood Chinese: The Arthur Dong Collection exhibit, these book talks will contribute to the rich dialogue of Chinese and Chinese American presence in Hollywood.
