Due to an overwhelming response from the public, visitors can now savor
Jake Lee’s timeless watercolors for just a little bit longer.
Produced in cooperation with the Auto Mobile Club of Southern California,
the exhibit highlights more than 60 watercolors, including eight from
the Auto Club’s WESTWAYS cover art collection, from the late-Jake
Lee, a highly respected yet intensely private painter who influenced
numerous other artists in California for decades.

Stroll down memory lane again in the Growing Up Chinese American:
Childhood Toys and Memories exhibit. The toys featured in this
exhibit originate from CAM’s permanent collection and explores
the relationship between childhood toys and the subtle but meaningful
effects they have on the everyday life of Chinese American children
growing up in a rapidly changing 20th century America.

will be unveiling a new multi-media exhibition entitled Chinaman’s
Chance: Views of the Chinese American Experience on view from March
6 through July 27, 2008. Curated by Chip Tom, this exhibit examines
the diverse Chinese American experience from the days of the Transcontinental
Railroad construction to today.

Program and Exhibit
Open Late May 2008 (exact date TBD)
Picture This! is a program collaboration between CAM, Venice
Arts, and San Gabriel High School. Twelve students will be documenting
their life stories through black and white photography and CAM will
be creating an exhibit of student work in honor of Asian Pacific Heritage
month in May. Inspired by the upcoming exhibit, Asian Roots, American
Reality: Photos by Corky Lee, the exhibit will feature artistic
interpretive stories of students who live in San Gabriel Valley.

A premiere event in the Southern California, this annual banquet heralds
the inspiring achievements of individuals/organizations within the fields
of art, literature, science, community, business, government, law and
athletics who have made significant and lasting contributions to the
Chinese American community. In addition, this event also serves as the
chief fundraiser for CAM with proceeds helping to propel CAM into its
next phase of expansion. We invite you to come make history with us

EXHIBIT DATES: November 16, 2008 – May 31, 2009
Asian Roots, American Reality: Photographs by Corky Lee showcases
the work of New York-based photojournalist, Corky Lee, who is widely
known as the most prolific photographer documenting the Asian Pacific
American experience. For the past 30 years, Lee's images have increased
the visual presence of the Asian Pacific American community while chronicling
its expansion and evolution. The Chinese American Museum is proud to
debut 88 timeless photographs from Corky Lee's career in his first major
retrospective and only West Coast premiere.

*CAM’s Fifth Anniversary Celebration

On December 18, 2003, CAM opened its doors with the goal of cultivating
public awareness, understanding and appreciation for the more than 150
years of Chinese American history in the United States. Five years later,
CAM is embarking on another extraordinary journey to expand both a building
and a dream. Join staff and supporters in celebrating our milestone
fifth anniversary with merriment, reflection and forward thinking as
we endeavor to transform the rest of the historic Garnier Building and
its 16,000 square feet of additional space into a permanent home for
the museum and its community.
