The following is a poem that was written by the junior officers of the USS Inflict near the completion of our 1966 Western Pacific Cruise, (West PAC). The poem was ordered by our Commanding Officer or maybe the Executive Officer, and was to contain the names of all the minesweepers in the division. Upon completion, this poem was then forwarded to the Commander of Mine Division Seventy-One. In which he had forwarded to all hands serving in Mine Division Seventy-One.
From
Tourane to the Point De Ca-Mau
That six hundred miles of coast
We have plied through rain and darkness
As the 'Market Time' gray ghosts.
Up and down the coast we've wandered
IMPERVIOUS-ly (if you please)
Searching junks of steel or wooden
Boarding trawlers in high seas.
Always prying, ever busy
Ready at a moments call
For a fire fight, or a hand out
We've dispensed them, one and all.
We've INFLICT-ed marks on "Charlie'"
He'll remember us, we know
Now the time has come for parting
Homeward bounding, we must go.
Though the tour has been a long one
Almost eleven months in all
With LOYALTY, We've served them you
Met your every single call.
We are leaving, we're not sorry
Only tears of sweat we've shed
But we stand a little taller
And we proudly lift our head.
For we've met our Nation's challenge
ENGAGE-d the enemy wherever we could
With non-magnetic personalities
Men of Iron and Ships of Wood.
FORTIFY-ed by the knowledge
That the little part we have done
Has been surely instrumental
In a war which will be won.
Though a five day search and rescue in
Guam
Has delayed our trip sublime
The arriving home commitment
We still intend to meet on time.
Though we're glad we're homeward bounding
and the tour is almost done.
We are proud to have served you
Mine Division Seventy-One.
