My interest in sculpting started in High School and I have been sculpting off and on ever since. The medium I used was water based clay, firing and glazing my pieces. In 1994, I met a professional sculptor and he introduced me to oil based clay and bronze casting. I produced my first bronze in 1998, a Dragon. My subject matter leans toward fantasy design. I hope to create something no one has seen before. My last piece, however, is realism. An East African bird. I’m told it looks like a Dragon and that is why I chose it. I have sculpted two Dragons and I’m thinking about a third. The Wallflowers piece is also realism. I liked the idea of doing different textures and flowers seemed a suitable subject. Bronze is an expensive medium but I like the permanence and the ability to cast several pieces from the mold. Although commercial
success in this field would suggest a more conservative subject matter,
I’m content to do the pieces I find out of the ordinary. Most people have
not seen a Shoebill and some are convinced that it is a fictitious animal.
I couldn’t resist sculpting one and I’m thrilled with the final result.
