Pendulum Recoil Escapement

The design of this mechanism can be found in the book MAKING WOODEN MECHANICAL MODELS by Alan and Gill Bridgewater.

This is a model of the core “engine” that drives a grandfather’s clock. The sizes of the parts, the quality of the workmanship and the finish of the pivot points are all critical to its function. If any are executed significantly wrong, the whole motion grinds to a halt...and, sadly, this example does exactly that. Still, it is a fun and attractive prototype that will lead to other explorations.

The materials are brass, oak, teak and maple.
