Dr. van Eenwyk

This lecture will introduce chaos theory through slides and a video that demonstrate how chaotic dynamics look when represented graphically. Dr. van Eenwyk will explain in depth the similarity between chaos theory and Dr. C.G. Jung's concepts, especially psychic energy, archetypes, and symbols, the pillars of the ongoing journey of individuation. Dr. van Eenwyk will draw on the ideas contained in his new book, Archetypes and Attractors: The Chaotic World of Symbols.

The workshop will provide an in-depth exploration of the relationship between chaotic dynamics and symbols. What are the mechanics of symbols? How do they operate in our lives, dreams, and rituals? We will look at a folktale and a myth to see how chaotic dynamics operate in symbolic themes. Once we become familiar with how chaotic dynamics operate in symbols, we will analyze examples from our own lives to see how the science of chaos and Jungian psychology can provide insight into how to cope with the turbulence in which we often find ourselves.

The Rev. Dr. John van Eenwyk is the Associate Rector at Saint John's Episcopal Church, Olympia; a training analyst at the C.G. Jung Institute of the Pacific Northwest; and a clinical supervisor at the University of Washington School of Medicine. A licensed clinical psychologist, he is in full-time private practice and lectures internationally on the treatment of torture survivors.
