Karen, along with the seven other members of her writing group, formed Pod Publishing. Their first book, My Mother's Tattoo & Other Family Memoirs, appeared in March 1996. To this anthology each writing group member contributed a memoir about his or her mother or father, or a mother or father figure. Says Karen, "These essays are not Hallmark cards about how perfect our parents are. These are honest-yet-loving looks at our parents."
On Why She Volunteers: "Studying Jungian psychology has given me an understanding of human nature that I can apply immediately to the characters in my stories, and so has made me a better writer. Acting as newsletter editor gives me the chance to serve the very Society from which I have learned so much, using my best skills."
