Like with all sports, paragliding and hang gliding due care must be taken when participating. If you attempt to fly a Paraglider or hang glider without the proper training and check-offs, or do something improper while flying, it this sport can become quite dangerous and very possible you may hurt, permanently damage, or kill yourself; or maybe some innocent bystander on the ground. In other words you must get training before you attempt to fly yourself. There are many, many very good instructors who will take you under their wing. However, with that said. it is very rewarding and worth a certain level of risk. Then again so is almost everything that is worth while. If a pilot is basically trained, pays attention to what he or she is doing and follows basic common sense rules, it can be generally quite safe. I went eleven years without hurting myself but a moment of inattentiveness and over aggressiveness on my part left me with one broken arm. One year and one month after that I broke an important tendon in my ankle (which tendons aren't important, eh?) because I again got aggressive and wanted the high-score on a spot landing more than I wanted a safe landing. Since these things come in threes.... Remember, when you are hundreds or thousands of feet above the ground you better think at all times about what you are doing and where you are. There are views and sights that you can see will never be forgotten. You will have the vantage point of an eagle or hawk, and sometimes you will fly with them too. |
