Bamboo Bridge Railings

I made the curved railing from 5/4 cedar decking. I cut an eight-foot piece of 1x4 in an arc, four inches thick at the middle and one inch at each end. Then I attached a ten-foot piece to it at the middle, adding screws out toward the ends until it wouldn't bend anymore. For the final curve, I used clamps. The finished other railing lies on the ground.

The eight-foot pieces fit between the bridge uprights, while the ten-foot rails extend over them.

One eight-foot section is permanently attached under each railing. A second one is secured with only three screws, so it can be removed easily. Spacers were placed between the two pieces to anchor the tops of the bamboo pickets. The inside boards are the removable ones, so that when they are taken off, the bamboo pickets stay in place, since they are leaning outward. With these inside covers off, replacements or pattern changes can be made.
