Moving a 40 Year Old Chinese Witchhazel

Winter and late fall are good times to move plants unless your winters are severe. Plants are dormant, and most places have ample water in the ground. Root growth continues in the winter even if the top of the plant rests.

The root ball on this tree was too big to lift even on the cart. I am just aligning it on the ice-covered boards. Then I pulled it with a chain and come-along an inch or two at a time. I used my truck and a chain around the rootball to pull it out of the hole, often the most difficult part of moving a large plant.
