This is Lem's original plant of Point Defiance Rhododendron, now close to forty years old. Lem made the cross in the 1960s, and it was registered by the Metropolitian Park District in 1970.
Point Defiance is a cross between Anna, a 1952 Lem hybrid named after his wife; and Marinus Koster, a 1937 Koster cross.
The original Point Defiance is now fifteen feet tall. It has grown thin and rangey because of heavy shade, but should fill out as the canopy is opened up. It does still flower, but not as fully as it should in more open shade.
