| While Bill and Carole Hicks were pruning in the Point Defiance Rhododendron Garden, they discovered a few seedlings under a large, contorted specimen. The area was flooded with sunlight, had a bed of moss several inches thick, and was situated out of all traffic patterns. |

As they looked at the surrounding area, they discovered several more seedlings--then hundreds. They were growing like those on the mountain hillsides of Nepal. Some were new this spring; others sprouted last year. |

The rotting vegetation provided needed nutrients while the thick moss retained necessary moisture for the fragile babies. It will be interesting to watch the seedlings' development. Thanks, Carole and Bill, for finding this secret garden. |
