Foothills Trail--Wilkeson
Foothills Trail
An unpaved extesion on the uphill side continues through timberland to Carbonado, while the undeveloped downhill extension heads to South Prairie Creek and will eventually connect with both the South Prairie and Buckley trails at Cascade Junction where the old rail lines met.
The wilkeson Foothills Trail is a long V, with one leg following the highway into town and the other climbing through the forest.
The cedar forest is quite dense, and desposits a lot of needles on the pavement.
One of the delights of this trail is the long downhill descent back to town.
Town itself is a unique place.
The town dates back to 1879, and at one time it boasted 3,000 citizens.  (Tacoma had a population of 1,098 in 1880.)  The Russian Orthodox Church, founded for the immigrant coal miners, was built in 1896.
