At this site you will find weekly reviews (more or less) by Stan and guest reviewers (usually Laurie). They review movies and videos from a unique point of view and rate them based on what they think. Don't expect to see the same ratings that you do in your local newspaper or television show. These are ratings by people in the cyber-culture for people in the cyber-culture.

Well, let me start-off by saying that I'm sorry about the break in the reviews. I've been very busy lately, and haven't had the time to write reviews and get reviews from other people to update this page (this is all volunteer work after all). Well, it's just me for this review. Hopefully, guest reviewers will return soon. I was really looking forward to James and the Giant Peach. I enjoy (in general) movies and television shows made in the style of stop-motion animated puppets. It could be because of watching Christmas specials made like that when I was a kid, or it could just be that I'm strange. Whatever the case, I went into the theater with a positive attitude. Unfortunately, a significant part of the movie is live-action. Definitely not what I was expecting. I was lead to believe that the entire movie was stop-motion animation. The live-action wouldn't have been enough to really disappoint me in-and-of itself, but the movie expects you to believe some incredible things. Not just from the point-of-view of James, but from "normal" people as well. The universe of James and the Giant Peach is completely different from ours, yet New York City is there and very similar to what is used to be years ago. I don't have a problem with "suspending belief" when reading a story or watching one, but it just didn't work for me in this movie. On top of this, I really wasn't caught-up into the movie. I found it fairly boring. While the universe allows incredible things to happen, not much actually does. Perhaps children will find this movie more entertaining. | |
