Futon is pronounced the way you pronounce crouton. The similarity ends there, however.
Futon mattresses originated in Asia, where they were usually placed on the floor. Today, futons are normally filled with cotton and placed on some type of frame. Depending on the frame, it may allow the futon to be comfortably used as a bed, couch, and possibly a type of chaise lounge. Along with the frame and mattress, most people also buy a slipcover for the futon to protect it and add to the decorating possibilities of the furniture
While the frame is still optional (it's very convenient to be able to keep the futon rolled-up in a closet, and just lay it out on the floor for company to sleep on when needed), most people use them with frames because of the added functionality and aesthetic appeal the frames offer.
Futon furniture can easily change with your needs. The futon mattress, frame, and slipcover can be replaced independently of each other. This allows you to inexpensively change the style of your futon furniture (useful when redecorating a room), to upgrade your futon furniture, to replace parts that are worn, etc. For example, if you repaint or change the carpet in the room your futon furniture is in, simply replace its slipcover to better match the new look of the room.
