Poetic Songs
One day I hope what I write can live up to the quality below.
-
Cherish - This is pure poetry. The meter of the
words are strong, as is the rhyme scheme. Moreover, the words are powerful.
Who hasn't worshipped someone from afar? It has a ring of courtly love
to it.
-
Never My Love - Written to reassure a lover. Who
wouldn't be reassured. This is a love that is going to last. A lovely tapestry
of words that transform themselves into emotion.
-
Over My Head - A short and bittersweet song about
the pull of love. Is it about forbidden love? Or a sharing of emotions?
It is left to the listener to decide. One thing is clear, there is an emotional
bond that links hearts
-
Dreams - What are the dreams that are changing
her? Are they of a man, or something higher. It is never clear, and
doesn't need to be. When our dreams, our aspirations are able to mold us
into something better, something new, we are living a fulfilled life.
-
Linger - Confusion and torn emotion. Amidst the
heights of love, she discovered her lover wasn't faithful. Now she is torn.
The feelings are still there, but the trust isn't. What to do...what to
do.
-
Operator (that's not the way it feels) - Long
ago his lover ran off with his best friend. He wants to call them to let
them know he is over it, but is he? It is clear he is struggling with feelings
of betrayal that conflict with loyalty to those who betrayed him. That
conflict has the elements of greatness in it.
-
Salsberry Hill - This is about having a religious
experience and not know how to respond to it. No one understand and there
is fear of ridicule. This is a topic that no other song writer has dared
touch.
-
Your Eyes - This is about partnership. He is
lost and incomplete without his better half.
-
Closer to fine - The images this song provides
are amazing! Every student has seen this professor. So much in pursuit
of excellence that he has left the real world. Standing in his ivory tower,
lording over those in his domain.
-
Honesty - When all the words are spoken, all
the deeds done, what is more important than honesty? The reasoning is much
more elequently stated than I could here.
-
Your Song - This inspired song was the first
song that made me realize that songs are poetry. The words flow beautifully.
He doesn't have much, but he gives what he can. Who wouldn't be thrilled
to receive something as beautiful as this?
-
Isn't Life Strange - One of my favorite songs
by one of my favorite groups. The haunting words of the chorus echo with
the power of desire. Opportunties taken, opportunties lost. Only today
remains.
-
Your Wildest Dreams - Remembrances of a
lover from long ago. Does she still think of me? Does she dream of
me? These are questions we all ask as we muddle through life and romance.
The power is in it universality.
-
The Turn of a Friendly Card - Every pulp novelist
knows the lure of the gambler. There is something magical about the thrill
of being able to risk it all. We are born to follow our destinies. This
is a song to remember when we reach our own private rublicons.
-
A man for all seasons - This song exemplifies
why Al Stewart stands far above the masses. This song intertwines history,
philosophy and poetry, something few moderns are able to successfully do.
The title comes from the play/movie about Thomas More, a man who so principled
that he preferred to forfeit his life than sign a document he believe was
morally wrong. An example for all of us to strive for.
-
If it doesn't come naturally, leave it - These
are words to live by, and this song deserves study. Scars are the only
result of trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. It may take time,
but the reword is well worth the wait.
-
Not the One - A romance of connivance, not of
love. Someone else lurks in the recesses of the mind. Was it intentional,
or a mistaken choice? Comfort has taken priority to love. Yet, she
will always mean something.
-
Secret Journey - This is the pilgrims song. At
some point in our life, each of us takes a journey to "make some sense
of this". Through our struggles we shall acquire wisdom and become the
holy man.
-
Walking on the Moon - I've never heard a better
way to describe the ecstacy surrounding a new love. The words pinpoint
the feeling.
-
Russians - This is probably the most perfect
example poetry within a song. The words are flawless and flow freely. To
me it is the most telling example of Stings genius.
-
The Logical song - Supertramp realizes that the
big questions are simple. In a world telling everything, how am I to learn
"Who am I?". I discovered this song as a teenager, and it quickly became
my favorite. What teenager can't identify?
-
The Whole of the moon - Vivid imagry and a powerful
message make this song a must. It's about being dumbfoundly in awe. It
brings back memories for me.
