The History of Flight Inches Ahead: This inch-long helicopter made its maiden flight yesterday in Mainz, Germany, hovering at 5.2 inches at the Institute for Microtechnology. The two blades rotate at more than 100,000 times a minute. About the size of a German penny (background), the helicopter weighs one-hundredth of an ounce, is one-third of an inch tall and costs $68,000. The motor is connected to a source of electricity by copper threads. Researchers hope their micromotor will have applications in medicine, computers and toys.
