1997 Jane L. Kakaley
This is an original copyrighted ten part mystery quilt. New parts will be posted on the 1st and 15th of each month. The finished size will be 46" X 46" (52" X 52").
I have discovered a new option for this quilt that I like much better. It requires additional yardage of the multi color and white fabric. The directions, when different, will be in parentheses. I am doing it this way because some of you may have discovered that I put Part One on my web page before Christmas and you might have already started. Both options look great to me, but my personal preference is for the second option.
This quilt is designed using a multi-color fabric(I will be using a blue, green and purple leaf print), a light, medium and dark of two of these colors(I will be using blues and greens), an accent color(I will be using a bright purpley pink), white and gray.
This quilt is designed more for the intermediate quilter, but I do encourage beginners to give it a try. It is much easier than it looks and if you follow along, you will probably surprise yourself that you were able to make this quilt.
It is very important that your seam allowances are exactly 1/4" when making this quilt. To test your accuracy, take two 2" strips of scrap fabric and sew together using a 1/4" seam allowance. Press the seam open. Measure the width of your new strip. It should measure 3 1/2" wide. If it does not, try placing mole skin or several layers of tape 1/4" from your sewing machine needle, to use as a guide. Now repeat the test. When your guide is properly placed and you are able to sew an exact 1/4" seam allowance, proceed with MQ#4.
Please note that unless you have a 1/4" foot, using the edge of your presser foot as a guide will not result in an exact 1/4" seam.
We will be using rotary cutting and strip piecing techniques to make this quilt.
I'm really excited about the new patterns that I have added this spring!!!! They are applique, so you can do them no
matter what your skill level. For a quick easy project that can be completed in an afternoon, use fusible web. Or if
you prefer handwork, you can do as I do and use needleturn, or use whatever method you are most comfortable with. For
starters, I have the Calla Lily Applique and the Sunflower Applique.
LET THE FUN BEGIN!!!!!
Mystery Quilt#4 Schedule
If you have not yet bought your fabric, Pine Lake Fabrics has my main fabric and several others.
I went to Pine Lake Fabrics last weekend and picked out more fabrics for this mystery. They are not necessarily the ones that I used, although the main fabric is the same, but they will work wonderfully. The only ones that I did not find were the white and gray.
Part One - January 1, 1998
Part Two - January 15, 1998
Part Three - February 1, 1998
Part Four - February 15, 1998
Part Five - March 1, 1998
Part Six - March 15, 1998
I have been made aware of a cutting error in Part One. The yardages are correct, but please check the cutting directions for the white fabric in Part One.
Part Seven - April 1, 1998
Part Eight - April 15, 1998
It is now 1AM April 20, 1998 and I have just returned home from a business trip. I will address the issue of my not posting Part 8 on time here rather than try to respond to all of you individually.
For those of you that were concerned that something had happened to me or my family. Thank you!!! We are all fine except for the fact that I just found out tonight, after returning from Quilt Market, that my oldest son punched my youngest son in the mouth and he is now missing one of his front teeth. Needless to say I am not a happy camper. But it has made me so upset that I can't go to sleep even though I have now been up for 21 hours! That is the good news for you guys, because it means I will get Part 8 up now, even though it is 1AM and I have to be up by 5AM.
Next I would like to remind everyone that this is a free pattern and I am not perfect... sometimes it might take me a few days to get a part posted, but I NEVER have and NEVER will leave a mystery unfinished. Had I paid more attention to dates when writing the schedule for this quilt, I probably would have left April 15th blank...but I didn't. April 15th is tax day for me plus I was trying to get ready for Quilt Market plus I was still trying to work my regular job. Yes, my life is just as hectic as yours. I don't need to be "yelled at" in emails. I have tried to raise my kids to be flexible about schedules - they don't always work. Please try to remember this as you do my mysteries. I did choose to not post this before I left for Quilt Market because I decided that I wanted to get at least 2 hours of sleep (3AM - 5AM) before leaving for the airport. I am sorry if this has upset some of you, but as I have said, I will never leave a mystery unfinished.
