Brooks Park
Brooks Park is a small, relatively unused pocket park right off of Newport Avenue. There are steps that lead down to a very small dock so you can avoid getting your feet wet and on-street parking means a short haul to the put-in. Unfortunately, nearby rocks and the shape of the surrounding shoreline, makes it difficult to maneuver a longer kayak in and out of this put-in. The main channel is to the center and river right (toward downtown Bend). On river left between #1 and #2 there's a large amount of silt accumulation (which means shallows) and the water vegetation can get quite thick in the summer. Although the current isn't very strong, there's a dam downstream of the Newport Avenue Bridge and it's best to turn around right before you get to the bridge. River otters like to hang out around this area. They're pretty shy and will pop underwater after checking you out for a few seconds. If the water is muddy, it usually means the otters have been active. This park will be closed during the rebuilding of the Newport Avenue Bridge. (I'll post details as they become available.) back to where to paddle |
