
68U is a twin turbine, Type II helicopter. It's on an exclusive use contract from Aris Helicopters, and can be dispatched anywhere in the US. As a Type II, it can carry heavier loads and more people than a Type III ship like 98D. 68U has traditionally been used for large fire support. This involves shuttling troops (firefighters), cargo transport, and bucket work.
During the 1998 season, 68U was carded as a rappel ship. It can
deploy up to 6 rappellers for initial attack. It's currently the
only 58-T being used for Forest Service fire rappel operations.

Rappelling out of 68U is a completely different experience than with 98D. 68U is much more roomier and has a bigger door to exit out of. You step forward out on a step, then rotate inward on the lower, second step. When the spotter gives the signal, you unlock, then start to lower yourself back. This is called a faith lean. At some point as you lean backwards, gravity starts to work, and you fall under the step, toward the helicopter. You then start rappelling.

Four rappellers use a single rope anchored outside and above the door. The Genies are pre-attached. The rappellers sit side by side, secured to the aircraft with a chicken strap (a piece of webbing you wear around your waist, attached to a hardpoint on the aircraft). The spotter sits next to the open door. When the spotter gives the signal, you unbuckle your seat belt, move to the door, clip in to the Genie and lock off. The spotter then gives the go to the skid signal, you unclip your chicken strap, and begin the rappel sequence.
