D. C. Waldorf's Guide To The Flint Axes Of Southern Scandinavia And North Germany. D. C. Waldorf's Guide To The Flint Axes Of Southern Scandinavia And North Germany. Though the text is complete enough that it can stand on its own, this small book was basically designed to serve as a companion to the DVD, Making Danish Square-Sectioned Axes With D.C. Waldorf. Much of material here-in has been distilled from the Waldorf’s un-published Danish files and should help to clarify the picture of the flint technology of Southern Scandinavia before the Dagger Period. It is roughly divided into two parts: a simplified overall view of the prehistory and artifacts before the Late Neolithic, and a detailed description of square-sectioned axes and how they were made. Comb bound, 64 pages, with many never-before-published drawings by the late Val Waldorf. If you have D.C.’s guide to daggers, you’ll definitely want to add this one to your collection. $15. per copy. The next best thing to a live demonstration is a video,
and this one takes you to DC Waldorf's home in the Ozark Hills of
southwestern Missouri. There he uses his skills to bring to life the
techniques illustrated in his book. Digitally re-mastered from the original footage and computer edited, it now can be viewed as originally conceived with titles linking the scenes to the chapters and figures in the book. The first half deals with raw material processing, working nodules, blocks and slabs with a side-light on making gunflints. Second half, holding positions, platform preparation and pressure flaking are discussed. Also covered are Clovis fluting by percussion, and making of a small arrow point. Running time 1 hr. 48 min. Price is $25. To Order. |

So it's over the hills and far away as D.C. Waldorf journeys to the
Northwest in search of this volcanic glass. A stop at Glass Buttes in
Central Oregon produces a vision of a knapper's paradise. Next comes the
making of a large point from a block of obsidian. The middle of
Washington's Cascade Range is the scenic background. On to Dane Martin's
Arlington, Washington, home to work a large slab down to stage 3, and
take on a huge 300lb bolder. As a piper is called in to honor the
fragmented stone, D.C. marches off to the beach at Bowman's Bay for one
last demonstration; how to make a small point from a flake of obsidian. In this digitally re-mastered version the scenic interludes are even more spectacular and the knapping footage, now clearer, still remains as some of the best ever shot. This DVD should be a welcome addition to your lithic library. Running time, 2 hrs. Price is $25. To Order. |
