CELEBRATING MINNESOTA'S SESQUICENTENNIAL

Minnesota, the 32nd state admitted to the union, officially celebrated its 150th anniversary on May 11, 2008. But the Sesquicentennial is a yearlong, statewide celebration commemorating Minnesota's heritage while looking forward to a thriving, innovative future.

Many parts of Minnesota became hemecht (home) to Luxembourg immigrants. The first settlers arrived in the 1850's and settled in the counties of Stearns, Winona, Scott, Wabasha, Dakota, Ramsey, Houston, Hennepin, Brown, Polk and Blue Earth. Read more about Minnesota's Luxembourgers from They Chose Minnesota: A Survey of the State's Ethnic Groups by June D. Holmquist.
