The Luxemburger Gazette is treasure trove for all
Luxembourg-Americans interested in their family history. The Gazette was
published by Nicholas Gonner, and later his son, in Dubuque, Iowa from
1871-1918. In addition to news of Luxembourg, it featured news of
Luxembourgers and Luxembourg communities throughout the United States. The
pro-German sympathies of the paper during World War I contributed to the
paper's demise during an era of strong anti-German sentiment in the United
States.
An every name and place index to the Luxembourger Gazette (Volume II of the 1987 reedition of Luxembourgers in the New World) makes this an invaluable resource for researchers. Not only is the Gazette an excellent source for determining marriage and death dates, obituaries often identify the town in Luxembourg where an ancestor was born or emigrated from. The Gazette is printed in German using in a typeface known as German Gothic, Fraktur or Black Letter which can initially be challenging but is well worth the effort. Microfilm copies of the Gazette can be borrowed from several libraries through interlibrary loan, as well as from the Family History Library. | |||
